General Atomics requested that Fiber Dynamics, Inc. improve upon the UAV landing gear strut of its Predator® B MQ-9 Reaper both in terms of performance and in terms of TAKT (cycle) time to fabricate the crucial part.

Through CNC ply cutting, we were able to develop a complex hollow-cavity component that measured 73” long and 8” wide. To save time and money we used two important processes. We first incorporated hollow core, negative draft geometry made with a single monolithic mandrel using “one shot,” Lost Core Resin Transfer Molding (LCRTM). We then utilized conventional matched-die resin transfer molding and the out-of-autoclave process to lower the client’s overall costs.

The results of our work were quickly and duly noted. Not only did the Predator® B MQ-9 Reaper's landing gear performance improve exceptionally, but there was also significant improvement in turnaround time as far as production rate. The MQ-9 Reaper is a quintessential component in America's ongoing conflict against enemies both overseas and domestic. Fiber Dynamics, Inc. is gratified in its role in that vital struggle.
